Why Art Matters for Young Children
As a dedicated parent, you naturally want your child to succeed. When it comes to early childhood education, the chances are that you’ve already introduced your toddler to subjects like reading, science and maybe even math. However, did you know that introducing children to art from a young age can improve their overall academic achievement? Check out the following ways that art can boost your child’s development at preschool.
Art Helps Children Process the World Around Them
When your toddler comes home and proudly shows you their artwork, one of your first thoughts may be, “I wonder what this is supposed to be.” Although the final product may appear abstract to the adult eye, art is a crucial tool to help young children understand and process the world around them. Toddlers represent their perceptions of people, places, and objects in their lives through art, which ultimately helps them make sense of their surroundings.
Boost Self-Confidence and Independence
Regardless of the type of art that your little one is interested in — whether it’s finger painting, coloring or oil pastels — creating their own artistic masterpieces is sure to improve their self-confidence and sense of autonomy. Giving children creative control over their art allows them to exercise a number of skills, including decision-making. This sense of authority allows young children to gain confidence in their own choices, even if it’s simply deciding between red or blue for their next paint stroke.
Make Room for Creativity
Last but certainly not least, introducing your toddler to art is valuable because it gives them a creative outlet. Young children absorb an incredible amount of information each day, even when they’re not at school. Taking in the world around them may be overwhelming for your toddler but having a creative outlet to express their thoughts and feelings can encourage healthy processing, learning and growth.
