How to Say Goodbye at Drop Off During the First Days of Childcare

Taking Child to Childcare

Is your child getting ready to start child care or preschool? Are you feeling anxious about saying goodbye to them at drop-off and then having to leave them all day? If so, we have some tips on making the transition a smooth one for both of you!

Consistency Is Important

One thing that will reassure your child as they get ready for their first day of infant or toddler child care is if they have a stable routine every morning. This way, your child will know what to expect without any surprises. For example, have breakfast, get dressed, read a story, and give a hug goodbye every morning before dropping them off at the child care center. Allow plenty of time so there isn’t increased anxiety from being rushed.

Communicate With Your Child

Another way to ensure the transition will go smoothly is to tell your child what he can expect from their day at preschool. Acknowledge your child’s feelings about this new chapter. It always helps if you have an upbeat attitude, reminding them how much fun preschool can be. More importantly, tell them that you will come back to pick them up! Some parents might think the transition will be easier if they sneak out while their child is not looking, but this can sometimes provoke even more anxiety. Make it clear that you will be back so that your child can be comforted and reassured throughout the day. This way, when you leave your child at the door with the caregiver, they will feel as safe and secure. It’s a great idea to allow your child to tour their classroom and meet their teacher in advance if possible.

Don’t Linger Too Long!

As much as you might want to stay a few more minutes to give your child another hug goodbye, especially when you see tears coming out, it might actually prolong the sadness. There is also the risk that your child can interpret your worry as you not wanting to leave them alone. Reassure your child that they will have lots of fun and meet new friends at the child care center or preschool.

Be Conscious of Feelings

The parent can sometimes have a harder time separating from the child than the child from the parent. This is very common, especially if it’s the first time leaving your child. However, since your child is strongly attuned to your feelings, they will sense this and feel hesitant or confused. Be as positive as possible to reassure your child that everything will be fine! Your child will start to adjust and create bonds with the caregivers and other children at the child care center soon, so don’t worry if the tears continue for a little while. Allow your child to express their feelings and provide comfort and reassurance. It’s normal for them to be nervous. If you need some more reassurance, don’t hesitate to talk with your child’s caregiver and ask them for advice.
