From Comic Book Hero to Big-Screen Star
At the heart of this story is an unlikely, but lovable, hero: Dog Man. When a police officer and his loyal K-9 companion are injured on the job, a daring (and slightly wild) surgery fuses them together, creating Dog Man — a crime-fighting, tail-wagging superhero with a nose for justice! While he adjusts to his new identity, Dog Man must face off against his longtime nemesis, the mischievous Petey the Cat, voiced by none other than Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live).
Petey isn’t just causing trouble; he’s cloning himself and doubling the feline chaos. But in an unexpected twist, Petey and Dog Man may have to team up to stop a common enemy. Along the way, Dog Man discovers the power of family — and maybe even a kitten or two!
A Stellar Cast for a Wacky World
The voice cast features some big names bringing this comic book universe to life. In addition to Davidson as the notorious Petey, Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery voices Chief, Dog Man’s police chief boss. Wedding Crashers star Isla Fisher plays TV reporter Sarah Hatoff, while The Office’s Ricky Gervais lends his comedic chops to Flippy, a telekinetic fish.
A New Chapter in the Captain Underpants Universe
Fans of Pilkey’s work will recognize that Dog Man isn’t just a standalone adventure — it’s a spin-off set in the world of Captain Underpants. Directed by Peter Hastings, who previously worked on The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, this movie stays true to Pilkey’s signature mix of wild imagination, absurd humor, and heartfelt messages.
Since launching in 2016, the Dog Man series has taken off, with 12 books and a spinoff of its own (Cat Kid Comic Club). For fans of the books, the film promises to be a faithful and hilarious adaptation, packed with the same charm that made the series a hit.
Why We Can’t Wait
What makes Dog Man so special? It’s a story of embracing who you are — flaws, fur, and all — and the strength that comes from working together, even with those you least expect. Plus, who doesn’t love the idea of a part-man, part-dog superhero who’s as good at rolling over as he is at stopping crime?
With its quirky plot, talented cast, and Pilkey’s unique storytelling, Dog Man is shaping up to be a must-watch for families, kids, and anyone looking for a good laugh. Mark your calendars for January 31, 2025, because justice is about to get a whole lot furrier!
