Starting Child Care: Tips for Your Preschooler

Preschool Girl Coloring

Preschoolers are often fun and ready for any new adventure that comes their way — making their first day at a new child care facility a fun one for everyone! However, some kids will be old enough to experience anxiety, which is perfectly normal when presented with a new situation. Taking more time upfront to provide your child with a higher level of comfort will pay off on their first day.

Before the First Day

Get to know the teacher in your child’s classroom. Good communication goes a long way and can aid in a smooth transition for all. Talk with your preschooler about what the schedule will be like and what time of the day you plan to pick up your child. This helps set an expectation for your preschooler and also gives them some reassurance that you will be back soon.

The First Day

Label everything and bring extras. Your child is likely to have some fun and messy adventures during their preschool time, as this is when finger paints and many other types of creative play is introduced. Plus, outdoor play is more likely to be a part of their day which can quickly lead to mishaps and dirty clothing. Ask caregivers when the best time is to pick up or drop off based on how busy they are. Often, shifting your schedule by 10 minutes will sometimes provide a less chaotic environment and give you extra time to chat with teachers and learn about your child’s day.

After the First Day

Volunteer to come read to the class or have lunch with your child whenever possible. Help your child’s weekend schedule stay similar to their schedule during the week, or you’re going to spend a bad Monday and Tuesday of each week as they have to get back to the “normal” schedule at daycare. Talk to your child about their day and what they have learned. Ask open ended questions and act genuinely interested and excited to hear what they have to say.

Your preschooler will learn an unbelievable amount during this very short period of time. They are soaking in everything around them, and love to share what they have learned! Taking the time to listen is one of the best ways to ensure that they feel comfortable with their care on a daily basis. Ready for a tour of our learning center?
