10 Tips to Make Your Child’s Halloween Safe

Children at Halloween

Halloween is a fun time for kiddos and parents alike, but there can also be some scary outcomes if you don’t take the proper precautions. This is a busy night out where small children can become overexcited and tired so it’s a good idea to be prepared! Here are the top 10 Halloween safety tips that will keep your night fun and fabulous for both you and your kids.

Top 10 Halloween Safety Tips

  1. Select costumes that have some sort of reflective element, so your child can be seen in the dark.
  2. Check accessories for anything that could be dangerous, such as a small parts or sharp objects.
  3. Children under the age of 12 should always go trick-or-treating with an adult. Even older children should travel in groups for safety.
  4. When you’re putting together your costume, look for options that include face paint instead of a mask. Masks can potentially interfere with vision, increasing the risk for falls and accidents.
  5. Choosing Trunk or Treats or houses that you are familiar with is best but if you choose to go to neighborhoods then encourage children of all ages to only visit homes where the porch lights are on. This is the universal indicator that the house is “open for business” on Halloween.
  6. Only cross the street at lighted crosswalks, and don’t make an assumption that vehicles will automatically stop for you. Never let children cross the road alone.
  7. Check all the treats before your child indulges to be sure they’re age appropriate, still tightly wrapped and tamper-free.
  8. When you’re passing out Halloween treats, consider something that is low in sugar and doesn’t include peanuts or tree nuts. This helps protect children who may have unexpected allergies from a dangerous reaction.
  9. Be equipped with flashlights or glowsticks for an extra kick of fun — and safety — for your trick-or-treat party.
  10. When you’re driving through a neighborhood, go slowly and always be on the lookout for children who may have scurried away from their crowd.
